Will and Kate in My Province!

Yesterday was supposed to be a "rest day" for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Day 7 of their Royal Tour of Canada but instead they made a quick detour and traveled to the fire-ravaged Slave Lake, which is only two and half hours from where I live in Edmonton. Last May, the devastating wildfire destroyed one third of the town, forced 7000 people to flee their homes and caused approximately 700 million dollars in damages. Many people lost everything in the fire. Since I was in bed sick yesterday with the flu I was able to watch the live coverage of the royal couple's much-anticipated visit to Slave Lake and it warmed my heart seeing how happy it made the residents being in their presence, shaking their hands, talking with them and taking pictures. I even saw Kate give someone a hug (much to the dismay of her security guard!) I wish I could have been there to witness it all in person. The couple's visit certainly gave the people of Slave Lake a much-needed morale boost and lifted their spirits. I'm sure they'll be talking about it for years! Here are some pictures from their tour:

More than 3000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse and (if they were lucky) shake hands with the royal couple. I heard that the crowd sang 'O Canada' a couple of times before Will and Kate arrived : ).

 Lucky Dog!

In the gymnasium of Northern Lakes College, Will and Kate met with 50 families who lost their homes in the fire to talk about how they plan on moving forward and rebuilding their lives.

Because this is a fashion blog, this post wouldn't be complete without mentioning what Kate was wearing yesterday! She looked elegantly chic in her white ruffled blouse, a navy one-button Canadian-designed Smythe blazer (the same one she wore on Day 4 of the tour), her favorite J Brand 811 Mid-Rise jeans, which she wore three days in a row (atta girl!), a Linda Camm belt and L.K. Bennett wedges.

I still don't get the hype with these two, but if their presence lifted these people's spirits, then I'm all for it. I never heard about this Slave Lake fire...how horrible.

I wonder how far she walked in those wedges. I wonder if they are comfortable.

I must admit I really like these two! Taking their time to really talk to people and connect is very cool! Happy to hear they made it to my home province!
Great post.
I also really like her outfit.

Hope you are feeling better Marie!

Kate looks fabulous and I love that she wore her jeans more than twice on this tour!

Obviously as a shameless monarchist (of course, only till about 1688) I'm biased but I really like these two and I really like Kate. She seems like such a genuine person and they seem to be so nice and happy and, well, normal together. And I really like that they included a stop in Slave Lake in the Canadian tour - the morale boost was needed and so go on them!

Regardless of their effort to "promote" the new monarchy era, I really like this couple. They look genuinely nice, friendly, and down to earth. They also look very much in love :D I think they deserve the hype! Who I don't think deserve any hype is Kate's sister, Pippa :(

ps. Sad that they didn't stop over in Toronto!

she always look so chic, lol the last picture looks like she took a pair of scissors and cut a piece of her blazer off. but so cool that the two went to alberta and visited the town with their fire tragedy!

I think it's fabulous that they took the time to go to Slave Lake. I was actually born there, but we moved when I was just over a year old, and I haven't been back since. I'm sure all the locals were thrilled to have the Royal Couple in their town!

She is so effortlessly fashionable. Thanks for posting the link to where people can donate to help victims from the fires.

I'm not a huge fan of the concept of a monarchy in a modern democratic society, but I'm glad that they took some time to really get to know the people in the area versus just waving, posing for some photos, and leaving.

I love her outfit as well, but she looks so frail! In pre-wedding photos, she looks so much healthier. Perhaps all of the media pressure is getting to her? Who knows.

Oh Marie--I'm so homesick right now. I just did a post on their visit to Calgary and cried my eyes out. Hope you're feeling better.

I'm in love with Will and Kate. I absolutely adore them. I do hope they take a "bit" of down time to enjoy themselves on their trip. I think it is great what they are doing.

They seem to be such a cute couple. It's great that they're taking the time to tour places like this. Kate is SO skinny! The girl can pull off an outfit like nobody's business.
