Sheer Madness

Here's Madonna and her (embarrassed?) daughter Lourdes at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Can you guess who's 14 and who's 52? Yeah, me neither. Personally, the only cheeks I want to see of Madonna's are the plastic ones on her face. But Madonna wasn't the only one who left little up to the imagination Sunday night:

Michelle Rodgriguez showed off her fighting form in this sheer hot mess, mermaid-esque, pewter-colored lace gown.
Britney Spears probably gave her styling tips.

Remember what Brit Brit wore to the 2010 Grammy's?
This dress by D & G which stands for Don'teveraGain

A Fashion Don't: Don't wear pasties/doilies you can clearly see to a classy function like Stephanie Seymour did underneath her Azzedine Alaïa dress at The Costume Institute Gala in 2008.

I guess that's why her name is See More.

Now this is how you pull off a sheer gown! With class not ass. Halle Berry looked gorgeous and elegant without bearing her nibbly bits in this stunning Elie Saab dress at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony.

What do you think about sheer gowns? Sheer Madness or Sheer Genius? Let me know in the comment section below!

  1. Those pasties are pretty bad! You would think that they would take photographs before they left the house to see what a camera flash may reveal.

Where are their mothers to put them in check?

  2. Good grief! What were some (most) of these celebs thinking? Especially Stephanie with those pasties. Shouldn't those be skin color, not white?
Stephanie's stylist, if she used one, must have had some kind of vendetta against her to let her be seen in public like that. I almost feel sorry for her....

  3. Hahaha! Great post Marie! These are all jaw dropping, face squishing, messes. Except Halle of course. Ay-yuy-yuy! Love the See More joke! Very clever! Lol!

  4. Oh man, some of these are purely atrocious. Yikes!!!

  5. I am thinking that Madonna is looking too "puffy" in the face..she needs to take a break.

  6. Yikes, this is KINDA frightening! Halle's dress does look gorgeous on her, but I think it would be a total fail on anyone who is... not Halle! ;) The rest are truly awful. I like sheer, but in small doses!

  7. I agree, none of those are cute exposing so much, you can still be sexy without being too sexy.

  8. Gack - so many people who appear to have forgotten their pants/dignity. But you are so right about Halle Berry, she looked trule stunning and elegant in that gown.

  9. Ridiculous how such pretty women (albeit some such 'plastic' pretty women) put it all out there, thinking that they look sexy.

  10. That woman is insane. My mother is around the same age as Madonna and I would be so ashamed if she went out on public looking like that. I don't understand why the daughter didn't tell her she looked terrible.

  11. I think Halle Berry looks good in anything...she has such a nice body. The rest...what were they thinking? Hideous!

  17. Those dresses are horrible! I don't understand who would think that was fashionable. They all look so silly. If Madonna can't pull it off, no one can!

  18. I'm surprised you didn't add Rihanna to the mix. What did you think of her ensemble? She does have a great body...but I just don't know.

  21. ugh I dislike all those dresses, looks so trashy! and yeah Madonna's outfit was disgusting at the vanity fair party, if I was her daughter I'd be so embarrsed haha but then again if Madonna is my mom with all the $$$ I'd put up with her flashy dresses!

  22. Apart from Halle Berry's dress, all of those sheer dresses are fairly hideous!!

  23. Ha! It is so AWFUL! Why do such gorgeous women wear such awful things? I guess it's to make a statement - but she's better off hiding in some bizarre egg and having people carry her like Lady Gaga did... LOL!

  24. Ok I officially hate sheer gowns, there are bits and bobs flying everywhere in some of those dresses!

Great blog by the way, I love how you share your own opinions on fashion without just posting pictures and being 'air headed.'
Its great to have more intelligent women posting about fashion!

  25. Wow those are some horrible dresses! I can't get over the pasties...I would prefer to see nipples over that...even Pinks electrical taped x's would have been better!

  26. Sheer can be tricky. You are right - you need to be a classy lady like Halle to pull it off. I don't like the trashy styles you showed us here ...

  27. BARFARONI to all of them!

well except halle...she can do no wrong in the dress department. but in the men department...uhhh that's a different story.

  28. ooo those thighs and boobs sticking out is not very flattering at all!! I say sheer madness!!

  29. Omg, Michelle Rodriguez looked like such a mess in that dress. Every pic of her in it looked so uncomfortable and sloppy. I think it's like you said, if it's done in a classy way sheer is fabulous. All the other examples aside from Halle though were just about the furthest thing away from classy though haha. Fabulous, fun post love!

  31. ONLY Halle Berry got this right.

It's all just a bit too boarder-line lingerie and should stay in the boudoir where it belongs!!

  32. sheer gowns are either super trashy or super classy. i'd say that halle berry's elie saab is the only good one here. what were the other ladies thinking. i love really light sheer fabrics like mandy moore's neckline at last weeks oscars. beautiful.

  34. she's Madonna.. I can't say anything. It's her unique style i guess.
I like that Lourdes looks so beautiful and feminine, but a little bit too old for her only 15.
